Nuts
Shell
The mongongo shell is the hard protective layer around the kernel of the nutritious nut of Schinziophyton rautanenii from southern African woodlands. It is not a primary food, but it governs storage life, in-shell roasting, and how nuts move through trade. Home cooks crack shells for peak freshness; factories crack and aspirate them before packing kernels. Shell fragments are a dental hazard—inspect home-cracked meats carefully. Clean shells may be composted or used as biomass; never assume every shell is edible or safe to smoke food with. Species home range: Kalahari and surrounding southern African regions. Edible value lives in the kernel, whose flavour is rich, oily, and distinctive—traditional staple snack of San and other regional peoples. Respect cultural food context; supply is wild or smallholder, not industrial orchard scale. Shell hardness influences whether retail sells in-shell product at all. Keep shell grit out of flour mills and blenders. Sound in-shell lots often keep longer than warm shelled kernels because the shell limits oxygen.

Shell is largely mineral; edible value is minimal except as calcium source when finely prepared.
History
Peoples of southern African woodlands relied on mongongo nuts as a calorie-dense wild staple.
Ethnographic records documented mongongo’s central role in Kalahari diets.
Development and specialty-food projects explored mongongo oil and kernels for wider markets.
