Nuts
Cold Pressed
Cold-pressed betel nut oil is mechanically expressed from the seed of the Areca palm (Areca catechu), commonly called areca nut at controlled low temperatures to retain aroma and delicate fatty acids. It tastes more of the nut—astringent, warming, and not a Western baking nut—used traditionally with betel leaf and lime—than heavily refined oil. Best as a finishing oil for salads, drizzles, and gentle brushes rather than hard deep frying. Composition context: not a mainstream culinary oilseed in global trade. Buy dark bottles, keep cool, and finish within months of opening. Origin note: South and Southeast Asia, with deep cultural use in betel quids. Treat as a culturally specific stimulant seed, not a mild dessert nut; health guidance applies. Allergen oil: distinct from tree-nut allergens but pharmacologically active; not a children’s snack. Cloudiness can be normal in unrefined oils; varnish smells are not. Price reflects lower thermal abuse and often lower yield. Do not confuse cold-pressed flavour oil with neutral refined frying fat.

History
Areca by-products saw limited industrial interest; culinary oil never became a global staple.
Specialty and research uses of areca fractions remained niche.
