Base

The base is the narrower lower portion of the black trumpet where it meets the ground—slightly thicker-walled than the rim, sometimes with more attached debris or tough bits. Trim only what is sandy or fibrous; usable base flesh still has good flavour. In the pan, base pieces may need a moment longer than paper-thin rims. For drying, bases take slightly more time to go fully brittle. Discard only clearly rotten or insect-tunneled bases.
