Nuts
Meal
Betel Nut meal is a coarse grind of the seed of the Areca palm (Areca catechu), commonly called areca nut that still feels sandy and particulate rather than powder-fine. It adds visible flecks and a rustic crunch to cookies, coatings, crumbles, and hearty batters. Flavour is astringent, warming, and not a Western baking nut—used traditionally with betel leaf and lime. Meal often keeps more skin and oil than refined flour, so it tastes fuller and darkens more in the oven. Toast meal in a dry pan to bloom aroma before folding into doughs. Useful wherever traditional areca quids and cultural preparations rather than Western pastry baking. Storage: dried nuts keep in cool dry conditions; quality judged by aroma and hardness. Process notes: traditionally sliced or crushed for quid; not interchangeable with sweet snack nuts. Treat as a culturally specific stimulant seed, not a mild dessert nut; health guidance applies. Treat as distinct from tree-nut allergens but pharmacologically active; not a children’s snack. Choose meal for texture and flour for smoother crumbs and pastes.

History
Crushed areca preparations featured in traditional quid assembly, not European-style nut pastes.
Prepared areca products stayed within cultural markets rather than bakery wholesale.
Commercial areca preparations continued in regional retail where the habit is traditional.
