Extract
Hop extract concentrates alpha acids, oils, or fractionated compounds into liquid or resin forms for precise bittering and standardised brewing. CO₂ extracts and isomerised products let brewers hit IBUs with less vegetal mass; aroma extracts attempt to bottle specific oil cuts. Outside breweries, extracts appear in hop water, bitters, and experimental kitchen syrups where cone debris is unwanted. Extracts are potent—overdosing creates harsh, solvent-like bitterness. They do not fully replace late-hop aroma from whole hops or pellets when floral complexity is the goal.

History
Early hop concentrates aimed to stabilise bitterness for industrial lager production.
CO₂ extraction became the standard route for clean brewing hop extracts.
Specialty oil fractions and hop waters expanded extract use beyond kettle bittering.
