Nuts
Oil
Mongongo oil is the expressed fat of the nutritious nut of Schinziophyton rautanenii from southern African woodlands, sold for finishing, baking, and sometimes gentle cooking. Cold-pressed oils taste more of the nut; refined oils are milder and sometimes more heat-tolerant. Sensory character: rich, oily, and distinctive—traditional staple snack of San and other regional peoples. Composition context: high-quality oil traditionally important as a food fat. Drizzle on salads, brush on pastry, or enrich dishes linked to southern African traditional foods and modern specialty exports in small volumes. Many nut oils dislike aggressive deep frying—bitterness and polymerisation appear when abused. Buy small dark bottles and recap promptly. Storage: high oil—keep cool after shelling. Respect cultural food context; supply is wild or smallholder, not industrial orchard scale. Allergen oils can still matter clinically: treat as tree-nut style oilseed; specialty import. Quality oil smells clean and true to mongongo, never like varnish.
