Silicon dioxide (silica) is an inert anti-caking agent used as a fine white powder to keep salt, spices, powdered drinks, and dry mixes free-flowing. Food grades are amorphous silica or silica gel particles that adsorb moisture and reduce clumping without adding flavour. Typical use levels are low—often fractions of a percent—so the powder is felt more in flow than on the tongue. It does not dissolve in water; it stays as microscopic particles distributed through the mix. Choose food-grade amorphous forms specified for ingestion; industrial crystalline quartz dust is a different material and not a culinary substitute.
