Legal
Terms and conditions
These terms govern use of Ingredient Index. If you do not agree, do not use the site.
Last updated: 28 September 2026. Operator: Ingredient Index, ingredientindex.com.
The service
Ingredient Index is a public reference catalogue of ingredients, categories, recipes, nutrition notes, pairings, and related kitchen information. Optional features may include guest or signed-in shopping lists, shopper accounts, supplier listings, and public contact details for suppliers. We may change, suspend, or withdraw any part of the site, including registration and supplier tools, at any time.
No professional advice
Nothing on this site is medical, nutritional, dietetic, allergen, legal, or food-safety advice. Nutrition figures are typical estimates per 100 g of edible portion and may not match a specific product, batch, or serving. Recipes, pairings, anti-pairings, grades, history notes, and “I can supply this” listings are general information only.
You are solely responsible for how you cook, store, sell, label, or eat anything you learned about here. Check current packaging, local rules, and qualified professionals. If you have an allergy, intolerance, or medical condition, do not rely on this site.
Your risk
You use the site, and you cook and eat, entirely at your own risk. Food can spoil, recipes can fail, data can be wrong, and suppliers may not be who they claim to be. We do not inspect kitchens, verify offerings, or guarantee that a listed ingredient is safe, legal, or available.
No warranty
The site is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including accuracy, completeness, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the site will be uninterrupted, secure, or free of errors, or that defects will be corrected.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Ingredient Index and its operators, contributors, and hosts are not liable for any loss or damage arising from the site or from relying on it. That includes food-borne illness, allergic reaction, poisoning, injury, death, lost profit, lost data, business interruption, wasted ingredients, failed recipes, or dealings with suppliers or other users.
Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us for using the site in the 12 months before the claim (which is typically nothing) and (b) the minimum amount the law requires. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, even if we were told they might happen.
Nothing in these terms excludes liability that the law does not allow to be excluded, such as fraud or (where applicable) death or personal injury caused by negligence, to the extent that exclusion is forbidden.
Accounts and suppliers
If registration is enabled, you must give accurate details, keep your password secret, and be old enough to agree to these terms. You are responsible for activity on your account. We may refuse, suspend, or close accounts, listings, or handles.
Supplier pages, contact details, and offerings are provided by the supplier, not verified by us. Publishing a phone number, email, or address is your choice and your risk. Do not list anything you are not allowed to sell. Comply with food, tax, and trading rules in your country. We may remove listings without notice.
Your content
If you submit profile information, images, list notes, or supplier copy, you grant us a worldwide, royalty-free licence to host and display it as part of operating the site. You warrant that you have the rights to it and that it is not unlawful, misleading, or infringing. You agree to indemnify us against claims arising from your content or your use of the site, including claims by customers of a supplier listing.
Acceptable use
You must not:
- Scrape, overload, or attack the site, or bypass security.
- Misrepresent who you are, or post others’ personal data without permission.
- Use the catalogue as a substitute for regulated labelling, HACCP, or professional sign-off.
- Copy substantial parts of the catalogue for a competing product except as the law allows (for example fair dealing or fair use).
Intellectual property
Site design, software, and the selection and arrangement of the catalogue belong to Ingredient Index or its licensors. Ingredient names and facts about food are not “owned” in the abstract, but our text, structure, and images may not be reused as a database dump without permission, except where a licence or the law says otherwise.
Third parties
Links, Google Analytics, email delivery, hosting, and other third-party services are outside our control. Their terms and privacy practices apply to those services. We are not responsible for them.
Changes
We may change these terms by posting an updated version. The “Last updated” date will change. Continued use is acceptance of the new terms.
Law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction, except that we may still seek relief anywhere if needed to protect the site. If a court finds part of these terms unenforceable, the rest still applies.
If you have a consumer right that cannot be waived in your country, that right is not taken away by these terms.
