Fruit
Moon and Stars
A tier
Moon and Stars is a legendary heirloom watermelon with dark rind speckled in yellow star spots and often a larger yellow “moon,” deep red or sometimes yellow flesh depending on strain, and rich old-fashioned flavour. Fruit is large and oval; leaves may show yellow spotting too. Nearly lost commercially mid-century, it returned through seed-saver networks as a visual and flavour icon. Serve to show the rind pattern whole, then cut for dramatic contrast of dark shell and red heart. Flavour rewards full vine ripeness—earthy-sweet rather than purely candy. Seeded and variable between family lines; buy from reputable heirloom sources.
