Rebaudioside A

S tier

Rebaudioside A (reb A) is the steviol glycoside that launched Western stevia: sweet, reasonably clean, still capable of a liquorice-bitter tail at high dose. Most "stevia extract 97%" packs of the 2010s were reb A. Soft drinks and tabletop packets were built on it because the leaf contains a usable amount and the taste was the best common fraction at the time. It is two to three hundred times sweeter than sugar depending on purity. It does not like to sit alone in a still beverage at high sweetness—pair it or keep the dose modest. Newer reb M is rounder; reb A is the workhorse that still fills most industrial tanks.

History

FR

Bridel and Lavieille described steviol glycosides; reb A was later isolated as a principal sweet fraction.

US

High-purity reb A gained GRAS status and opened US diet-drink reformulation.

Global soft-drink companies standardised on reb A as the stevia workhorse.

Reb A remained the volume extract even as reb M took premium taste briefs.
