Van

Van is a mid-season Canadian dark cherry with compact, almost round fruit, glossy black-red skin, and dense sweet flesh that made it both a market variety and a prolific breeding parent. Flavour is rich and slightly winey when fully coloured; underripe picks stay pale and firm without aroma. Trees are hardy and productive in cooler sweet-cherry districts. Good for fresh eating, drying into chewy dark snacks, and classic cherry preserves. As a parent of Rainier and other modern types, Van’s genetics run through many blush and dark lineages. Still grown commercially where its ripening window and polliniser role matter.
