Polygonum odoratum

Herb

Polygonum odoratum

A tier

Polygonum odoratum is the older botanical name still printed on some seed lists for Vietnamese coriander—same peppery cilantro-like leaf as Persicaria odorata. Taxonomy moved; flavour did not. Buy plants by smell and leaf shape if Latin names disagree between vendors. Use raw or briefly wilted. Not cilantro (Coriandrum) despite English “coriander” in the common name.

History

Polygonum odoratum appeared in botanical and colonial agricultural notes.

Herbals used Polygonum for Vietnamese coriander widely.

Reclassification toward Persicaria accelerated.
