Tanaka is a classic large-fruited Japanese loquat cultivar—orange skin, thick sweet-tart flesh, and impressive size for fresh markets and home showpieces. Seeds still large but flesh recovery is good. Sets the dessert loquat image in many nurseries. Thin heavily for true large fruit. Harvest when fully coloured and slightly soft; ripen off tree only modestly. Jam from surplus is fragrant. Protect from birds at colour break.
