Ground Limestone

B tier

Ground limestone is milled natural calcium carbonate, cheaper and often coarser than PCC, used where a rustic fortificant or an acidity regulator will not be judged on sip smoothness. Some flours and animal-adjacent foods still use it. Geology shows: colour and trace minerals vary by quarry. It can grit a chocolate milk. Specify mesh size if a human has to drink the product. Organic and "natural calcium" claims sometimes prefer this origin story. It is still CaCO3, not a different nutrient.

History

Ground limestone was the original cheap calcium carbonate for agricultural and early food use.

Food-grade limestone flours entered cereal and baking-powder related uses.

Natural-food brands preferred ground limestone origin over precipitated chalk on labels.

Mesh-specified limestone still served dry foods; drinks moved to finer precipitates.
