Gijnlim
S tier
Gijnlim is a Dutch all-male hybrid bred for high early yield of straight green spears with tight tips and strong market uniformity. Male plants do not set seed berries, so crowns put energy into shoots rather than fruit, lengthening productive life and evening spear size for bunch packing. Flavour is clean and mildly sweet when cut young; over-mature spears still lignify at the base like any type. Commercial green asparagus programmes in temperate Europe lean on Gijnlim-type genetics for supermarket trays. Cook briefly—steam, pan-sear, or roast—to keep the emerald colour hybrid breeders selected for. Peeling is optional on thin early cuts; thick late spears still benefit from base trim.
