Imperial Star is an annual-grown artichoke variety bred to produce buds from seed in the first year without perennial establishment—opening artichoke growing to cold-climate gardeners who mulch or treat as annuals. Buds are green, medium, and solid; flavour is standard globe nuttiness. Spininess is reduced versus some older types. Steam and eat like Green Globe on a smaller average scale. Seed-grown uniformity varies with culture. A garden breakthrough more than a restaurant name.
