Nuts
Hartley
A tier
Hartley is a classic California English walnut long favoured for in-shell markets thanks to a thicker, durable shell and attractive nut shape. Kernels inside still deliver the familiar sweet-bitter J. regia flavour for snacks, baking, and holiday bowls. Fresh meats should smell clean; any varnish note means discard, not sugar-mask. Because shells are tougher than some modern thin-shell types, table cracking feels more substantial. Bakers use shelled Hartley as they would other English walnuts—halves for garnish, pieces for doughs—while retailers still move in-shell Hartley for seasonal display. Freeze shelled surplus. Light toast softens pellicle edge. Major tree-nut allergen rules apply. Compared with Chandler, Hartley is more of a traditional in-shell favourite than a light-kernel export champion. Harvest year and cool storage matter more than the cultivar label alone.
