A tier

Grape tomatoes are oblong mini fruits firmer and less juicy than round cherries, with thicker walls that travel well and hold shape in salads and lunch boxes. Flavour is sweet-tart; texture is meatier bite-for-bite than a cherry of the same weight. Red is standard; yellow and other colours appear in specialty packs. Use where you want tomato sweetness without a flood of gel—pasta salads, sheet-pan roasts, and whole garnishes. Halving still helps seasoning penetrate. They dry and confit attractively because of lower free water.

History

US

Commercial grape tomato types (notably Santa-class breeding) entered US markets as a firmer mini alternative to cherries.

Supermarkets worldwide stocked grape tomatoes for snacking and food service durability.

Colour variants and organic grape packs widened the category beyond basic red.
