Western
A tier
Western (often discussed as Western Schley type in trade) is a cornerstone cultivar of irrigated western pecan orchards, especially in the US Southwest and related belts. It yields attractive sweet kernels at commercial scale and frequently anchors pollination designs with partners such as Wichita. Flavour is rich and buttery with the soft oiliness that defines modern grocery pecans. Expect consistent graded halves and pieces from large shelling operations when seasons cooperate. Fresh Western-type meats should smell sweet and clean. Dominant in many bulk bakery and snack contracts from western production. Sample oil quality before grinding butter—volume production still ages in warm warehouses.
