Mediterranean Mussel
A tier
Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) thrives in warmer European and Southern Hemisphere waters, including the Mediterranean, Iberian Atlantic, and parts of South Africa and Australia. Shells are dark with a slightly more triangular outline than northern blue mussels; meats are often fuller and carry a richer, sometimes more robust marine flavour suited to tomato, garlic, and saffron. Steam with sofrito and white wine, bake under breadcrumbs, or add to zuppa di cozze and seafood paella in the last minutes. The same debearding and discard-closed rules apply. In heat-prone summers, buy from cold counters and cook the day of purchase for best texture.
