Botswanan mongongo refers to nuts from Botswanas share of the mongongo belt, wild woodland harvest tied to local communities. Flavour is rich and oily when fresh meats are properly prepared. A good Botswanan lot is carefully cracked and stored out of heat. A bad lot suffers rancidity in heat. Cultural food first; export second. Do not genericise it as African almond.
