Obata
C tier
Obata is a Brazilian Coffea arabica cultivar from the Instituto Agronômico de Campinas (IAC), selected from Sarchimor material (Timor Hybrid × Villa Sarchi) for coffee leaf rust resistance, compact-to-medium stature, and high productivity. Red Obata is the best-known form and is widely planted in modern Brazilian systems. The cup tends toward sweet chocolate and nut profiles typical of Brazilian commercial arabica, with cleaner acidity at higher elevations. Obata is valued as a rust-resistant workhorse that supports volume production while remaining acceptable for quality-focused natural and pulped natural lots.
Also known as: Obata Vermelho, Obata IAC

History
CIFC Sarchimor breeding (Villa Sarchi × Timor Hybrid) created parental material later used in Brazil.
IAC introduced and selected Sarchimor progenies under Brazilian field conditions.
Advanced Obata lines were evaluated for rust resistance, yield, and plant architecture.
Obata IAC 1669-20 and related releases entered commercial nurseries.
Obata expanded rapidly in rust-prone and renovated farms across key Brazilian states.
Obata remained a major resistant cultivar alongside Catucaí, Arara, and other modern lines.
