Java is a Coffea arabica cultivar of Typica lineage that returned to commercial interest after germplasm from Indonesia—historically tied to early Typica introductions—was reselected and distributed, including material later grown in Cameroon and Central America. Modern “Java” specialty plantings often descend from Ethiopian-collected Typica-related stock conserved via Java and research stations. The variety is noted for relatively good tolerance to coffee berry disease in some environments and for a clean, sweet cup with herbal, chocolate, or mild fruit notes. Plants are typically tall Typica types requiring spacing and management suited to traditional arabica systems rather than dense dwarf orchards.
