Centroamericano

C tier

Centroamericano is an F1 hybrid Coffea arabica (also known as H1) from a cross of T5296 (a Sarchimor selection) with Rume Sudan, developed through CIRAD, ECOM, and partner programmes for high yield, coffee leaf rust resistance, and elevated cup quality. As a true F1, seed must come from controlled hybrid production; farm-saved seed loses uniformity. When well managed at suitable altitudes, Centroamericano can deliver complex, sweet, and floral cups that compete with traditional varieties while retaining commercial productivity. It is planted in Central America and promoted in renovation projects seeking both disease resilience and specialty potential.

Also known as: Centroamericano, Centroamericano / H1, H1 Hybrid (Centroamericano)

History

FR

CIRAD advanced arabica F1 hybrid research combining rust-resistant and high-quality parents.

T5296 Sarchimor was identified as a strong disease-resistant parent for hybrid programmes.

CR

Field trials of T5296 × Rume Sudan demonstrated high yield and competitive cup scores.

The hybrid was released and commercialised as Centroamericano (H1) for Central American farms.

World Coffee Research and partners promoted Centroamericano in climate and renovation trials.

Planting expanded where F1 nursery supply and technical support were available.
