Batian

C tier

Batian is a Kenyan Coffea arabica cultivar released by the Coffee Research Institute for resistance to coffee leaf rust and coffee berry disease with cup quality closer to traditional Kenyan varieties than Ruiru 11. It is a multi-parent selection including SL28, SL34, Rume Sudan, and other lines, grown as a tall plant suited to Kenyan agronomy. Since 2010 Batian has been promoted for replanting programmes that need durable disease resistance without fully abandoning Kenya’s reputation for bright, complex washed coffees. Performance depends on site and post-harvest care, but well-grown Batian can show classic citrus, blackcurrant, and floral notes.
