South Devon is Britain’s largest native cattle breed, a rich orange-red dual-purpose type from the south-west peninsula, historically valued for milk, beef, and draught. Modern beef lines are early maturing with a strong propensity to marble, producing large yet fine-textured carcasses that suit both grass and mixed finishing systems. Culinary use ranges from generously marbled steaks and roasting joints to mince and slow cuts; the breed is often marketed as premium West Country beef with a buttery, full flavour. EUROP and UK retail quality schemes frequently feature South Devon purebreds and crosses from Devon and Cornwall farms.
