Parthenais
C tier
Parthenais is a wheat-coloured French beef breed from the Gâtine and Deux-Sèvres area of western France, related to other blonde south-western cattle. Animals are medium to large framed with strong muscling and relatively fine bone, producing pale pink, lean-to-moderately marbled beef with a mild flavour and excellent conformation for roasting and grilling. Historically dual purpose for draught and meat, modern Parthenais is selected primarily for beef and maternal traits. The breed remains a regional specialty of Nouvelle-Aquitaine and adjoining departments, with growing interest for easy-calving terminal and purebred production.

A herd book established Parthenais as a distinct breed centred on the town of Parthenay.
Mechanisation shifted selection from draught power toward pure beef conformation and growth.
Performance recording improved muscling and carcass yield in commercial Parthenais herds.
Regional quality beef schemes promoted Parthenais as a specialty of western France.
Export of genetics and crossbreeding use expanded Parthenais beyond its traditional French range.
