Bonsmara is a South African composite beef breed developed scientifically from roughly five-eighths Afrikaner, three-sixteenths Hereford, and three-sixteenths Shorthorn to combine indigenous hardiness with British carcass quality. Cattle are typically red to reddish-brown, medium framed, and adapted to subtropical range; beef is moderately marbled, tender, and well suited to both grass and feedlot finishing. The breed dominates commercial beef production in South Africa and has spread across southern and eastern Africa and into other subtropical regions. Selection emphasises fertility, growth, tick resistance, and documented performance recording under the Bonsmara breed society system.
