Ortega
Ortega is a German white crossing of Müller-Thurgau and Siegerrebe, known for early ripening, low acid relative to Riesling, and aromas of peach, apricot, and light muscat spice. In Germany and England it produces soft, often off-dry wines for early drinking; careful dry examples exist but need cool sites to keep freshness. Body is light to medium; perfume is friendlier than intense Scheurebe. It suits northern latitudes where full ripening of classic varieties is uncertain. Drink with mild cheeses, fruit-forward salads, and light poultry. Off-dry Ortega can calm mild chili heat at the table. Kitchen use is limited—prefer drinking—though a dry bottle can briefly deglaze peach-glazed pork without the structure of Chenin or Riesling.
