Gewürztraminer
Gewürztraminer is a deeply aromatic white with lychee, rose petal, ginger, and tropical spice, often carrying residual sugar and a full, oily texture that softens its moderate acidity. Alsace is the spiritual home; cooler German and Austrian sites, New Zealand, and pockets of Oregon and Canada also produce notable bottles. Colour can run gold even when young, and the perfume announces itself the moment the glass is poured—this is not a shy table white. Culinary match thrives with aromatic spice: Thai curry, Chinese five-spice duck, Munster cheese, and onion tart. Off-dry styles cool chili heat; dry Alsatian examples still need bold food so the rose-lychee intensity does not float alone. In the kitchen use sparingly for pan sauces—its residual sugar can caramelise quickly—prefer drinking pairings over long reductions.

New World cool climates adopted Gewürztraminer for lychee-driven aromatic whites outside Europe.
