Tinta Roriz

Beverage

Tinta Roriz

Tinta Roriz is Portugal’s name for Tempranillo—medium-to-full red with red-cherry, plum, and dried-herb notes, firmer tannin than many Port-blend partners, and enough acid to keep Douro and Dão table wines lively. In the Douro it often shares vineyards with Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca; as a single-variety wine it can be spicy, savoury, and age-worthy without the oak heaviness of some Rioja styles. In the kitchen, use dry Tinta Roriz for braising pork, game birds, and bean stews where cherry fruit and moderate tannin matter more than jam. Reduce gently for pan sauces with chorizo, mushrooms, or roasted root vegetables; Port-level sweetness is not the goal—choose table bottlings, not fortified, for savoury work.

Also known as: Tinta Roriz, Tempranillo (synonym lineage)

Tinta Roriz was already established in Portuguese plantings as a red blending and table grape under local synonymy with Iberian Tempranillo.

PT

Douro and Dão growers refined Tinta Roriz as a backbone variety for dry reds and Port field blends.

PT

Modern DOC table-wine programmes elevated single-variety and premium blend Tinta Roriz beyond bulk Port fruit.
