Beverage
Nero d'Avola
Nero d’Avola is Sicily’s flagship red—black cherry, plum, and Mediterranean herb with medium tannins that range from juicy and early-drinking to denser, oak-aged bottles from inland and southern vineyards. Heat-tolerant vines keep colour and fruit even in warm harvests when yields are controlled. Deglaze for caponata-adjacent pan sauces, braise pork and lamb with olives, or finish tomato seafood stews carefully so herb notes stay bright. It is more forgiving than Nebbiolo in the pan and less jammy than many New World reds when well made.

History
Nero d’Avola (Calabrese) was cultivated in southeastern Sicily as a local dark red.
Sicilian bulk and blending use kept the variety widespread even when fine-wine focus lagged.
Quality Sicilian estates repositioned Nero d’Avola as a premium island red for export.
