Sonalika

E tier

Sonalika is a semi-dwarf Green Revolution spring wheat cultivar widely adopted in South Asia from the late 1960s, combining high yield, early maturity, and acceptable chapati quality. It symbolises the modernisation of Indian and regional wheat production that raised national grain output. Flour from Sonalika-type crops supplied bulk atta and maida for mass-market breads and flatbreads. Though newer cultivars have largely replaced it, Sonalika remains historically important and occasionally grown or referenced in breeding pedigrees.

History

IN

Sonalika was released and rapidly adopted across India’s wheat belt as a Green Revolution cultivar.

IN

Sonalika and sister semi-dwarfs drove major yield gains in irrigated northern plains.

PK

Neighbouring South Asian countries similarly expanded Sonalika-type plantings.

IN

Newer high-yield disease-resistant cultivars began displacing Sonalika.

Sonalika persisted in pedigrees and residual farm seed more than elite recommended lists.

Agricultural histories cited Sonalika as an emblem of South Asian wheat modernisation.
