Da Hong Pao (Big Red Robe) is a legendary Wuyi rock oolong (yancha) from the cliffs and valleys of Wuyishan in northern Fujian, produced from specific Camellia sinensis sinensis cultivars in the Wuyi shrub group. Processing involves withering, partial oxidation, rolling, and distinctive charcoal roasting that yields dark, twisted leaves and a mineral “rock rhyme” (yan yun). True mother-tree lots are vanishingly rare; commercial Da Hong Pao is usually blended from related Wuyi cultivars grown in certified rocky gardens. The cup is roasted, mineral, and complex—cocoa, dark fruit, orchid, and toasted grain over a lingering mineral sweetness—with medium body and many re-steeps. It is a gongfu specialty tea, also appreciated as a digestif-style oolong after rich meals.
