Ganoderma lucidum

Funghi

Ganoderma lucidum

S tier

Ganoderma lucidum is the classic glossy red reishi of East Asian tradition—a tough, varnished bracket used almost exclusively as a long-simmered decoction or extract, not a tender table mushroom. Flavour is intensely bitter, woody, and resinous; the reward is aromatic broth for tonic teas. Wild and cultivated fruiting bodies share the lacquered cap look. Slice or crush dried conks before simmering an hour or more; strain. Powdered extracts are modern shortcuts. True culinary use is broth-deepening, not stir-fry.
