Black Reishi

A tier

Black reishi is a loose trade term for very dark Ganoderma products—sometimes G. sinense purple-black types, sometimes heavily melanised or different dark species sold in herb shops. Expect bitter, woody decoction character; colour of the dried body is charcoal to blackish brown. Quality and true species vary by vendor—buy trusted sources. Simmer and strain like other reishi. Dark liquors look dramatic in a glass teapot. Not the same as culinary black fungus (wood ear).

History

Black reishi English labelling appeared on dark Ganoderma herb exports.

Supplement markets offered black reishi alongside red as a colour line.

Buyers were cautioned that black reishi species identity can be ambiguous.

Better vendors specified G. sinense or other species under black reishi names.
