Woodland caribou inhabit boreal forests and mountains of Canada and Alaska in smaller, more sedentary groups than barren-ground herds. Many populations are threatened; meat is rarely a commercial product and harvest is tightly controlled or closed. Historically the meat was lean forest caribou venison for local Indigenous use. Today conservation priority overrides culinary demand—do not expect retail supply. Any legal harvest is local and regulated.
