Nephelium lappaceum is rambutan—the hairy red (or yellow) tropical soapberry fruit whose translucent flesh clings mildly to a single seed, tasting sweet-floral and lychee-adjacent with more grape juiciness. Spines are softish hairs, not cactus spines. Southeast Asian lowland orchards dominate supply. Crack skin with a thumbnail; eat fresh chilled. Freezing damages texture. Choose brightly coloured, flexible-spined fruit—not dry brown. Seed is bitter/inedible. Seasonality drives night-market feasts; canned exists but is lesser.
