MD-2

Fruit

MD-2

S tier

MD-2 is the hybrid pineapple that remade fresh retail—extra-sweet yellow flesh, lower acidity than traditional Cayenne, cylindrical shape, and improved cold-chain behaviour. Marketed widely as “Gold” or similar premium labels, it became the default whole pineapple in many temperate supermarkets. Aroma is tropical and candy-like when base-ripe; underripe MD-2 still disappoints despite colour. Ideal for fresh wedges, fruit cups, and raw salsas where harsh acid would dominate. Grilling works but can taste one-note sweet without salt, chilli, or lime. Judge ripeness by heavy feel and fragrant base, not green-gold shell alone. Costa Rican and other tropical production feeds year-round supply.
