Spring Oat
A tier
Spring oats are sown after winter and dominate global oat acreage—including most porridge oat supply from Canada, the Nordics, and the northern US. They avoid harsh winter kill and produce the plump groats rolled into familiar flakes. Taste is standard sweet-nut oat; spring versus winter is a farming calendar distinction. Nearly every supermarket oat starts as spring-sown sativa. Quality grades for milling matter more to your bowl than the season word. Still, single-estate spring oat flakes can show terroir in freshness and toast notes.
