Tunis
C tier
Tunis is one of America’s oldest sheep breeds, descending from fat-tailed North African stock imported in the late eighteenth century and refined into a cinnamon-red, polled meat-and-wool farm breed. Early presidential and plantation flocks helped establish the type in the eastern United States. Tunis lamb is mild and tender with a soft fat cover when finished on eastern pastures—long favoured for farm-flock roasting lambs. The breed’s heat tolerance and calm temperament suit small farms; purebred meat remains a heritage specialty rather than a feedlot commodity.
