Montadale is an American breed founded by crossing Columbia and Cheviot to produce open-faced, hardy sheep with good carcass quality and medium wool. The goal was a stylish show and farm flock animal that still worked commercially in the mid-twentieth century. Montadale lamb is mild and well shaped for purebred farm sales, with neat legs and loins. Numbers are modest today; meat appears mainly through purebred breeders and local markets rather than national commodity programmes.
