Bluefaced Leicester

Bluefaced Leicester is the specialist crossing sire of Britain’s stratified sheep industry: a long, lean white sheep with a distinctly dark blue skin showing through fine white hair on the head. Rams over Swaledale, Blackface, and Welsh Mountain ewes produce the North of England Mule and Welsh Mule ewe lambs that dominate commercial lowland flocks. Pure Bluefaced Leicester lamb is long in the loin and relatively lean with a refined flavour—pleasant but less common than mule lambs finished for volume. The breed’s culinary impact is mainly through millions of mule-sired lambs that combine hardiness with improved carcass shape and milky early growth.
