Barbados Blackbelly
C tier
Barbados Blackbelly is a true tropical hair breed from Barbados, combining West African ancestry with island selection for heat tolerance, prolificacy, and the striking black belly and facial bars on a tan body. Rams are polled; the breed should not be confused with horned American “Barbado” hunting sheep. Island and export lamb is lean, finely textured, and takes spice rubs and jerk-style cooking brilliantly. Traditional Bajan stews and grilled dishes showcase the breed; modern ranchers in warm regions raise them for low-shearing systems and mild meat that still has more character than heavy grain lamb.
