Hayward

S tier

Hayward is the green kiwifruit cultivar that defined supermarket kiwi for decades—large oval fruit, bright green flesh, fine flavour balance, and excellent storage that enabled global sea freight. Almost every anonymous green kiwi in temperate grocery stores descends from Hayward plantings. Skin is densely fuzzy; core is pale and edible. The default for pavlova, lunchboxes, and sliced garnish. Buy firm and ripen at room temperature until slightly soft for best sugar-acid balance. Male pollinators are required in traditional Hayward blocks.
