Vaccinium membranaceum

Fruit

Vaccinium membranaceum

S tier

Vaccinium membranaceum is thinleaf huckleberry—the dark purple-black mountain berry of northwestern North America, intensely flavoured, seedy-small, and mostly wild-harvested rather than farmed. Taste is richer and more winey than many blueberries. High-elevation burns and forests define classic patches. Pie, jam, and fresh trailside handfuls are traditional; freeze carefully cleaned berries. Respect land access and sustainable picking—commercial pressure is real. Not the same as garden “huckleberry” misnomers for solanum. Tiny seeds and deep colour mark authentic mountain fruit.
