Penedesenca
B tier
Penedesenca is a Catalan dual-purpose breed from the Penedès wine region of Catalonia, noted for dark brown eggs, a distinctive comb type (often with side sprigs), and active Mediterranean carriage. Colour varieties include black, crele, partridge, and wheaten; birds are hardy foragers valued by smallholders for eggs and occasional table meat. Culinary use follows Spanish farm tradition: roasting younger birds and stewing older hens for rich stock and firm flesh. Dark eggs attract specialty markets; carcasses offer more flavour and less fat than industrial broiler chicken.

Formal breed recognition and standards advanced in mid-twentieth-century Spain.
Conservation breeders rebuilt numbers after decades of decline under industrial poultry.
International rare-breed interest brought limited Penedesenca exports for dark-egg flocks.
Specialty egg markets and heritage farming sustained Penedesenca beyond Catalonia.
