Lohmann Brown
E tier
Lohmann Brown is a commercial brown-egg hybrid from Lohmann Tierzucht (Germany), selected for high laying rate, robust shells, and adaptability across cage, barn, and free-range systems. Red-brown plumage and practical sex-link packages make it one of the most common industrial brown layers worldwide. Culinary use of the birds themselves is largely as spent-hen or surplus-male meat: lean, mild, and best suited to long moist cooking, shredding, stock, and further-processed products. Fresh roasting quality is secondary to egg genetics; table-meat branding rarely uses the Lohmann name at retail.

History
Heinz Lohmann’s poultry breeding enterprise formalised scientific selection programmes that underpinned later hybrid layer lines.
Lohmann brown-egg hybrids entered commercial European markets with strong performance under intensive housing.
International distribution of Lohmann Brown parent stock made the hybrid a standard in Asia, the Americas, and Oceania.
Breeding goals expanded to include behaviour and bone strength traits relevant to alternative and free-range systems.
Continued genetic improvement emphasised persistency of lay and feed conversion for global egg producers.
Lohmann Brown and related variants remained major brown-layer options as cage-free production expanded.
