Kraienkoppe

C tier

Kraienkopp (also spelled Kraienköppe) is a German–Dutch borderland breed with a walnut comb, muscular body, and strong game-like carriage. Developed as a dual-purpose and sporting utility bird, it ranges actively, lays tinted eggs, and yields firm, flavourful meat with more athletic texture than commercial broilers. Culinary use favours roasting younger birds and braising or stewing mature stock. The meat’s density and savoury character suit country cooking—whole roast chicken, coq-style red-wine braises, and grilled jointed pieces—where breed character matters more than maximum breast yield.

Also known as: Kraienköppe, Kraienkoppe, Kraienkopp, Kraienkopp, Kraienkoppe

History

DE

Breeders in Twente and the German–Dutch border region crossed local and game-type fowl toward a walnut-combed utility bird.

DE

The Kraienkopp was recognised in German poultry standards as a distinct dual-purpose breed.

NL

Dutch keepers along the border maintained parallel flocks under the Kraienkoppe name.

DE

Industrial poultry reduced purebred numbers, leaving Kraienkopp mainly with fanciers and small farms.

Rare-breed programmes promoted Kraienkopp for hardiness, foraging, and traditional table quality.
