ISA Brown
E tier
ISA Brown is a globally distributed commercial brown-egg hybrid developed by Institut de Sélection Animale (later part of the Hubbard/ISA breeding group). Sex-link colour genetics typically produce reddish-brown pullets and contrasting cockerels, enabling early sexing; birds are selected for high egg numbers, feed efficiency, and docile cage or barn temperament. Spent hens and surplus males enter the poultry meat stream as lean, mild cooking chicken rather than premium roasting birds. Meat is pale, low-fat, and firm—suited to boiling, shredding for soups and salads, mince, and processed products—while dedicated broiler hybrids supply most retail table chicken.

History
Institut de Sélection Animale expanded hybrid layer programmes that led to the ISA Brown commercial brand.
ISA Brown parent stock was exported widely, establishing the hybrid as a leading brown-egg layer in Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
Intensive selection improved peak production, shell quality, and livability under industrial housing systems.
Corporate consolidation linked ISA genetics with larger international poultry breeding companies while the ISA Brown name remained in trade.
Cage-free and enriched-colony transitions drove management adaptations for ISA Brown flocks without abandoning hybrid layer efficiency.
ISA Brown remained a reference brown layer in many markets for table eggs, with spent-hen meat used in processing and food service.
